Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus: which subscription earns its place

Model comparisons · Facts checked 22 October 2026

ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) is the better buy if you make things with AI: documents, analysis, code, images. Perplexity Pro ($17 a month billed annually) is better if you mostly look things up: cited answers, deep research and seven models, including GPT-6.1 Sol, which Plus also includes. Neither upgrade makes answers safe to use unchecked.

Plus is for making things; Pro is for finding things

Look at what you did with AI last week. If most of it was questions (what's the market size, who regulates this, what changed in the new version), Perplexity Pro fits. If most of it was output (a draft, a cleaned spreadsheet, a script, a slide), ChatGPT Plus fits.

We'd buy Plus for most people at work, because it does the finding adequately and the making well. Buy Perplexity Pro instead if research is the job itself, and you want sources in front of you on every answer and the freedom to switch between OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models.

A note on the $17. Perplexity's pricing page shows only the annual-billing price, so $17 assumes you pay for a year up front. Monthly billing has been reported at $20, which would make the two the same price; we couldn't confirm it on Perplexity's site.

Paying more bought confidence, not accuracy

The most useful finding for anyone weighing a premium AI plan comes from a study most people quote for a different reason.

In March 2025, Columbia's Tow Center gave eight AI search tools 200 news excerpts each and asked them to name the source article. Free Perplexity was wrong on 37%, the best of the eight. ChatGPT Search got 134 of 200 wrong and never declined to answer. The paid tiers were the surprise. Perplexity Pro answered more prompts correctly than free Perplexity, yet had a higher error rate overall, because, in the authors' words, the premium models "paradoxically also demonstrated higher error rates": they gave definite wrong answers where the free versions declined (Tow Center, March 2025). Grok 3's premium model showed the same pattern.

That study predates today's models, and neither vendor's current plan was tested. The pattern still fits what the vendors say about their own tools. OpenAI warned at the launch of deep research that it showed "weakness in confidence calibration, often failing to convey uncertainty accurately" (OpenAI deep research system card, February 2025). Salesforce's DeepTRACE audit found deep-research modes were less overconfident than plain AI search, yet still gave one-sided answers on debate questions, with citation accuracy of 40–80% across the systems tested, Perplexity and OpenAI's among them (September 2025).

So don't upgrade expecting fewer errors. Upgrade for more searches, better models and deeper research, and keep checking. For how the underlying models compare, see Perplexity vs ChatGPT.

Checking is the part no subscription covers. For Claude answers, Count does it per claim, tagging each one as a citation, an assumption, model knowledge or a hallucination.

Whatever you pay for, see the reasoning.

A better plan buys more answers, not more certain ones. Connect Count to ChatGPT or any MCP assistant and check the reasoning chain behind each claim before you share it.

Perplexity gives you more models; Plus gives you more of OpenAI

Perplexity Pro's model list reads like a tour of the industry: OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol, Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash, Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 5.5, plus Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7 and Nvidia's Nemotron 3.5 Super VL. What it doesn't include is any company's flagship. GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 are on Perplexity Max, at $167 a month billed annually (Perplexity help centre, 17 October 2026).

ChatGPT Plus is OpenAI only, and more of it. OpenAI's estimates for Plus list GPT-6.1 Sol at 15–160 messages per five hours, GPT-6 Luna at 350–3,000 and the flagship GPT-6 Astra at 5–45, all for its Work and Codex surfaces (learn.chatgpt.com). OpenAI's own pages disagree on which GPT-6 models appear in ordinary Chat, so check the model picker after you subscribe rather than before.

One overlap matters. Both plans include GPT-6.1 Sol. If that's the model you like, the question becomes which wrapper you prefer around it: Perplexity's search-first page, or ChatGPT's files, code, images and voice. The same model can still behave differently in each, because the search results and instructions it's given differ.

OpenAI publishes ranges; Perplexity publishes multiples

You'll hit limits on either plan eventually. How much warning you get differs.

OpenAI gives message ranges per model and per five-hour window, wide ones, but ranges. Perplexity describes Pro as ten times the free plan on web search, file uploads, asset generation and its Computer feature, with "weekly/monthly limits" for average use and no numbers. Since free Perplexity gets three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month, "ten times" gives you a rough sense, nothing firmer. The only hard numbers Perplexity publishes are for business plans: Enterprise Pro, from $40 a seat, allows 400 Pro Searches a week and 50 Research queries a month.

On cost over a year: Perplexity Pro at $17 a month comes to $204, paid up front. ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month is $240, paid as you go. A $36 difference shouldn't decide this; the work you do should.

Our rule of thumb:

  • Pick Perplexity Pro if you research for a living, read sources rather than trusting summaries, and want to compare models on the same search.
  • Pick ChatGPT Plus if research is the start of your work rather than the end of it, and you need files, analysis, code or images.
  • Pick neither yet if you've only used the free tiers occasionally. Both free plans are generous enough to show you which one you reach for.

Run a week of real questions through both free plans first

Both have free tiers, so the cheapest test is a week of your own questions before you pay. Keep a note of which tool you opened first each time; by Friday you'll know which subscription you'd use.

Then run a sharper check on three of those answers.

A two-minute check

  1. Pick a question you already know the answer to, ideally one with a specific number or date.
  2. Open every citation in both answers. Does the page say what the answer says, in the sentence it's attached to?
  3. Look for a refusal. Ask something that has no reliable answer. A tool that says "I couldn't find this" is behaving better than one that answers smoothly.
  4. Ask for the strongest counter-evidence. One-sided answers were a common failure in the DeepTRACE audit.
  5. Repeat one question tomorrow. If the facts change, neither run has earned your trust on them.

Whichever plan you choose, the checking stays with you. Count takes on the tedious part: connect it to ChatGPT, or any assistant that supports MCP, and it splits an answer into claims and shows the reasoning chain behind each one, labelled as a citation you can open, an assumption, model knowledge or a hallucination.

We've written about the gap between how much people trust AI and how often they check it in the AI trust gap.

Questions people ask

Is Perplexity Pro worth it compared with ChatGPT Plus?

If most of your use is looking things up and reading sources, yes: Perplexity Pro gives cited answers, deep research and seven models for $17 a month billed annually. If you also draft, analyse files, code or make images, ChatGPT Plus at $20 is better value.

Is Perplexity Pro cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?

On annual billing, yes: $17 a month against $20. Perplexity's pricing page shows only the annual price; monthly billing has been reported at $20, which would make them the same, but we couldn't confirm that on Perplexity's site.

Does Perplexity Pro include GPT models?

Yes. Perplexity Pro includes GPT-6.1 Sol, the same mid-tier OpenAI model ChatGPT Plus includes. OpenAI's flagship, GPT-6 Astra, is only on Perplexity Max, at $167 a month billed annually.

Is there a student discount on Perplexity Pro?

Yes. Education Pro costs $10 a month with SheerID student verification, according to Perplexity's help centre.

Which is more accurate, Perplexity Pro or ChatGPT Plus?

There's no current head-to-head test of the two plans. In the Tow Center's 2025 study of news citations, Perplexity was wrong less often than ChatGPT Search, but Perplexity Pro had a higher error rate than free Perplexity because it answered wrongly instead of declining. Check citations on either.
