Perplexity vs ChatGPT: a search engine that answers, or an assistant that searches
Model comparisons · Facts checked 22 October 2026
Use Perplexity to find things out: every answer carries citations, and Pro ($17 a month billed annually) lets you choose models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Use ChatGPT to do something with the answer: analyse a file, draft a report, write code. If you pay for one, most people should pick ChatGPT. Neither one's citations are safe to skip.
Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT? For finding out, yes; for getting it done, no
Ask both "what did the EU AI Act change in August 2026?" and you'll get similar paragraphs. The difference is in what comes next. Perplexity puts the sources first and expects you to read them. ChatGPT expects you to keep going: turn it into a briefing note, compare it with your policy document, draft the email.
That's the real split. Perplexity is a search engine that writes answers, running other companies' models, OpenAI's among them, on top of its own search. ChatGPT is an assistant that searches when it needs to, wrapped in tools for files, code and images.
Our position: if you'll pay for one, most people at work should pay for ChatGPT, because it researches adequately and does everything else too. If your job is mostly finding and checking information (analysts, researchers, journalists, consultants), Perplexity's citation-first layout makes that faster, and it earns its place.
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | |

| Published usage limits | None in numbers for Pro or Max | Five-hour estimates for Work and Codex |
Prices from perplexity.ai and learn.chatgpt.com, checked 22 October 2026. Perplexity's pricing page shows only annual-billing prices; monthly billing has been reported at $20 for Pro and $200 for Max, which we couldn't confirm.
Perplexity cites more carefully, which is not the same as being right
The best evidence on this pair is about search, and it is two years old in places. Read it for the patterns, not the scores.
The Tow Center test (March 2025). Columbia's Tow Center gave eight AI search tools 200 news excerpts each and asked for the headline, publisher, date and URL. The excerpts were chosen so that an ordinary Google search would find the original in its top three results. Perplexity was wrong on 37%, the best of the eight. ChatGPT Search got 134 of 200 wrong, flagged uncertainty only 15 times, and never once declined to answer.
The same study holds a warning for anyone about to upgrade. Perplexity Pro answered more prompts correctly than free Perplexity, yet had a higher error rate, because the premium tools gave definite wrong answers where the free ones declined. Paying more bought confidence, not caution.
DeepTRACE (September 2025). Salesforce researchers audited generative search and deep-research systems, Perplexity and OpenAI's GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 among them. Citation accuracy ranged from 40% to 80%. The systems often gave "one-sided, highly confident responses" on debate questions, with large fractions of statements unsupported by the sources they themselves listed.
Cited but Not Verified (May 2026). Across 14 models, the best produced working links more than 94% of the time, yet only 39–77% of claims were accurate.
Put together: Perplexity's habit of citing everything makes an answer quicker to check, and on the one head-to-head test it was wrong less often. That's a real advantage. A citation is still a claim about a page, not proof that the page says it. Our guide to prompts that cite sources covers how to ask either tool for checkable citations.
Opening every link takes time. In Claude, Count labels each claim as a citation, an assumption, model knowledge or a hallucination, so you know which links to open first.
A citation is a claim. Check it.
Perplexity and ChatGPT both put links next to their answers. Count goes one step further: connect it to ChatGPT or any MCP assistant and open the reasoning chain behind each claim to see whether the source really says it.
Quick research favours Perplexity; anything with a file favours ChatGPT
Four ordinary tasks, and which tool we'd reach for.
"Who are the main vendors in this market, and what do they charge?" Perplexity. You want breadth, links and a fast way to open each source. Its free plan gives three Pro Searches a day, which covers a lot of casual use.
"Read these three reports and tell me where they disagree." ChatGPT. Perplexity takes uploads (Pro raises the free allowance tenfold), but ChatGPT's file handling and data analysis are the stronger toolkit: it writes and runs Python on what you upload.
"Write me a 20-page brief on this regulation, with sources." Either, with care. ChatGPT's deep research proposes a plan you can edit before it runs, lets you restrict or prioritise the sites it uses, and takes 5–30 minutes. OpenAI was frank at launch that it can "hallucinate facts or make incorrect inferences" and "may struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors" (OpenAI deep research system card, February 2025). Perplexity's Research is included on Pro, with one query a month on Free.
"Turn this into a deck and a chart." ChatGPT, comfortably. Perplexity can create files and has limited image and video generation on Pro, but this is ChatGPT's home ground.
The pattern: Perplexity is strongest at the start of a piece of work, ChatGPT in the middle and at the end.
Perplexity sells model choice; ChatGPT sells a toolkit
Here's an odd fact about this comparison: Perplexity Pro includes GPT-6.1 Sol, the same mid-tier OpenAI model that ChatGPT Plus includes. Pro also offers Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7 and Nemotron 3.5 Super VL. Max adds the flagships: GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 (Perplexity help centre, 17 October 2026).
So with Perplexity you're buying a search layer plus a choice of engines. The same model inside a different product won't behave identically, because the search, the instructions and the sources it is fed all differ. But it does mean "Perplexity vs ChatGPT" is partly a comparison of OpenAI's model with OpenAI's model.
With ChatGPT Plus ($20) you're buying OpenAI's surroundings: the Codex coding agent, image generation, voice, credits to stretch usage, and published five-hour estimates (15–160 messages with GPT-6.1 Sol on Work and Codex). OpenAI's own pages currently disagree about which GPT-6 models reach the ordinary Chat window, so check the model picker on your plan.
Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually and gives you ten times the free allowance on searches, uploads, asset generation and its Computer feature, plus deep research and model selection. Perplexity doesn't publish numeric limits for Pro or Max, only "weekly/monthly limits" for average use. For a line-by-line plan comparison, see Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus.
Ask both the same question, then open every link
The fairest test is a factual question from your own field where you already know the answer and know which source settles it. Ask both tools, with search on, in the same words.
A two-minute check
- Open three citations from each. Does the cited page contain the sentence the answer rests on, or just the topic?
- Check the date. Search answers often cite a page that was right last year. Is each source current?
- Find the primary source. Is the link the original report or filing, or an article about it? Numbers drift with every retelling.
- Ask for the other side. DeepTRACE found search tools answering debate questions one-sidedly. "What's the strongest evidence against this?" shows whether either looked.
- Note any refusals. In the Tow Center test, declining to answer was rarer than it should have been. A tool that sometimes says "I couldn't find this" is telling you something useful.
If that's too much clicking for every answer, you're right. Count connects to ChatGPT, or any assistant that supports MCP, and splits an answer into claims, labelling each as a citation you can open, an assumption, the model's own memory or a hallucination, with the reasoning chain behind it.
We've written about why a well-referenced answer is the one people check least in the hidden AI hallucination.
Questions people ask
Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?
For looking things up, often yes: every Perplexity answer carries citations, and Pro lets you pick models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. For doing something with the answer (analysing a file, drafting a report, writing code) ChatGPT is the better tool, and it is the one most people should pay for if they pick one. Neither one's citations are safe to skip.
What is the difference between Perplexity AI and ChatGPT?
Perplexity is a search engine that writes answers with a citation on each one, and it runs several companies' models, including OpenAI's. ChatGPT is a general assistant from OpenAI that searches when needed and adds tools for files, data analysis, code, images and voice.
Is Perplexity more accurate than ChatGPT?
In the Tow Center's March 2025 test of news citations, Perplexity was wrong on 37% of queries and ChatGPT Search on 134 of 200. That study predates the current models, and other research found citation accuracy of 40–80% across search tools including both. Perplexity is easier to check, not safe to trust unchecked.
Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?
It uses OpenAI's models, not the ChatGPT app. Perplexity Pro includes GPT-6.1 Sol, and Max adds GPT-6 Astra, alongside models from Anthropic, Google and others (Perplexity help centre, October 2026).
Is Perplexity free?
Yes. The free plan gives basic models, three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month. Pro costs $17 a month billed annually.
Should I use Perplexity or ChatGPT for research?
For quick, wide research where you'll read the sources, Perplexity. For long reports or research that involves your own files, ChatGPT's deep research and data analysis go further. Either way, open the citations. See Claude vs ChatGPT for research for a third option.
